A Message from the Executive Director

Dear Supporters of Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action, Incorporated, Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action is proud to be approaching our Fiftieth (50) Year of Service to the Community. We began as Johnston County Community Action and added two additional counties (Lee and Harnett). We have expanded our services to assist infants to the elderly.

Our Agency Strategic Plan addresses the many needs of the community which includes HeadStart/Early Head Start; Community Service Block Grant Program; Weatherization/HARRP; HUDHousing Counseling; Duke Energy Helping Homes Fund; Rapid Re-housing Homeless Program and an Economic Development Program. Despite economic shifting and uncertain times, we have remained committed and true to our mission of providing resources to help improve thelives of many citizens in our three county area. Our slogan, "Helping People, Changing Lives"! is our workplace culture. It's how we have done business since 1966.

Our website gives the community a snap-shot of the many lives our agency touches. Information included on the website will give the community and recipients an easier access to the many programs we administer. It is the agency's goal to promote self-sufficiency for all ourcustomers.

Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action, Inc. built its new Smithfield Headquarters in 2012. We have a Facebook page and Twitter subscription. We invite you to become our friend on Facebook and follow our tweets; tell your friends, family and colleagues too. We believe that the more people with whom we share our story, the more our support will grow.

A very special thanks to our Board of Directors, Policy Councils, staff, and our donors for their unwavering support as we have administered the Agency's services. We are extremely pleased and grateful to have had the opportunity of serving the communities of Johnston, Lee, and Harnett Counties. We look forward to greater things to come as we "help people, change lives".

Warm Regards,

E. Marie Watson - Executive Director

Community Action

The primary purpose of Community Action agencies is to obtain grant funds and local contributions to use for services and activities which have a major impact on the causes of poverty in the community.

Community Action agencies, through coordination of public and private service programs, promote self–sufficiency for low income individuals and encourage the use of private sector involvement in anti-poverty activities.

Meeting this goal is a long and dynamic journey. Challenging, because it requires Community Action agencies to develop a variety of self-help programs and opportunities directly involving the poor. The Community Action concept has produced notable accomplishments in Johnston, Lee and Harnett Counties.

The idea that the poor should and can work efficiently on their own behalf to eliminate poverty is confirmed by their active participation in all programs we administer. The poor are the driving force in our agency; however, we provide educational and volunteer programs for all citizens.
